The
African Hope Committee is comprised of professionals
from a myriad of backgrounds including health,
education, and legal who have between them over
fifteen (15) years of experience in community
outreach and service. As concerned New York City
residents, the members of AHC have compiled information
and referral service networks that facilitate
positive behavior modification strategies in assisting
the newly arrived immigrants in staying physically,
emotionally, and socially healthy.
Consider
that the U.S. immigrant population is growing
and estimated to be about one third of the U.S
population by the year 2005.
Consider
these statistics from the U.S Census 2000 compiled
in August 2003 by Jill Wilson of the Migration
Policy Institute, New York City hosts the largest
African immigrant population, a population that
is steadily growing. Of the African born immigrants
counted in the 2000 census, 56% (498,927) entered
the country between 1990 and 2000, the largest
migration in over twenty years.
